At the beginning of the 19th century, fluorescent lamps and phosphors were developed during the study of discharge luminescence. At that time, the fluorescent lamp used zinc silicate phosphor, which was low in luminous efficiency and toxic. In 1942, A.H. McGee invented a calcium halophosphate phosphor and used it in fluorescent lamps, which caused a revolution in the field of lighting. This powder has high luminous efficiency, is non-toxic, and is inexpensive, and has been used all the time. With the development of industrial production, the phosphor manufacturing technology has become more and more refined, and the product quality has gradually improved.



In the early 1970s, Dutch scientists theoretically calculated the emission spectrum of the phosphor. It was found that the phosphors consisted of three narrow peaks of 450 nm, 550 nm and 610 nm (three primary colors), and the color rendering index and luminous efficiency were simultaneously improved. In 1974, the Netherlands, Fan Er Taiheng and others synthesized three kinds of rare earth phosphors with emission peaks in the above range, so that the luminous efficiency of the lamp reached 85lm/W, and the color rendering index was 85, which made the fluorescent lamp new. Breakthrough.

      


The rare earth trichromatic phosphors are characterized by narrow emission bands, more concentrated luminescence energy, high stability under short-wave ultraviolet excitation, and high temperature characteristics, and are more suitable for high-load thin-tube fluorescent lamps and various single-ended compact fluorescent lamps.


      


There are three main types of phosphors for lamps. The first category is for ordinary fluorescent lamps and low-pressure mercury lamps, the second is for ultraviolet light sources, and the third is for high-pressure mercury lamps and self-ballasted fluorescent lamps.
